Occult History, the Dark Ages & Rex Deus
Following the Roman destruction of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, Jewish priests went into hiding - taking with them esoteric secrets that were developed into mystic systems. Islamic and Christian Gnostics also developed systems. These various systems intermingled during the Dark Ages. One of the resulting orders was Rex Deus - or the "King Gods" - noble families claiming descent from the original Jewish temple priests. Rex Deus infiltrated the Catholic Church, influencing it from within.
